Chapter 13

By the time I pulled into Dot’s apartment building, I had pie crumbs all over my face, and the adrenaline in my body had cooled down. I was finally able to think a little bit more clearly. That wasn’t how I’d planned on seeing Jake. I hadn’t planned on seeing him at all, ever again.

But now it had happened, and I had to admit, it wasn’t as awkward as I thought it was going to be. Maybe I was growing up a little after all.

I knocked on Dot’s door. I pulled the thumb drive from my bra when she answered it and wiggled it with a grin.

“Well, I guess there are worse places you could have hidden that, though I’m not the biggest fan of boob sweat,” Dot said, raising her eyebrows and holding a palm out. “Where’d you find it?”

“Hidden behind a fake electrical outlet near the desk Rex was using. And my boobs don’t sweat.”

Rosie, standing at the kitchen counter and drinking a glass of water, looked impressed. “Good find.”

“Thanks. I’m better than the feds. Although they almost arrested me. Hence the hiding-the-key-in-the-bra thing.”

“Luckily, you got away. Now, let’s see what’s on this thing.”

Instead of going to her main machine, Dot moved to the living room and pulled a laptop from the drawer underneath a side table.

“How many computers do you own?” I asked.

“Right now, I have about ten in this apartment. This one is air-gapped. That means it’s never been connected to the internet. It doesn’t even have the capability to do it; I removed the wireless card and the ethernet connection before it was ever turned on.”

“Why are you using that one to look at the thumb drive?”

“Because I don’t know what’s on it. Given its origins and Rex’s history, there’s a chance that this drive has software or files on it designed to corrupt the computer that opens it or to disrupt my network. So I’m opening it on a computer that has no exterior access. The files on this are encrypted too, so it’s going to take a few minutes for me to get through that.”

“Don’t take too long. I’m going to the wedding rehearsal dinner tonight as Heather’s personal assistant. It starts at seven, and I have to find something appropriate to wear. Which is code for raiding Zoe’s closet.”

“You’ll have plenty of time. I just got in.”

I walked over to the couch and plonked myself down next to Dot, who opened a folder full of files. “I wonder what’s on here. It has to be important. Nobody encrypts a thumb drive and hides it behind a fake outlet they put into a hotel room over nothing.”

Dot double clicked the first file, a PDF, and the screen immediately opened a blueprint.

“What’s that of?” I asked, squinting at the screen and trying to get a good look.

Dot zoomed in on part of the screen, and we were able to better make it out.

“It looks like infrastructure plans. For a power plant, by the looks,” Rosie said.
